Nuance DAX Copilot
AI clinical assistant (ambient scribe) integrated with Epic/Cerner for automated consultation documentation
Overview
Nuance DAX Copilot is Microsoft's flagship AI clinical assistant, rebranded as Dragon Copilot in March 2025. It functions as an ambient scribe: recording and transcribing patient consultations, automatically structuring clinical notes, and integrating them directly into the provider's patient record (Epic, Cerner, Oracle Health). DAX covers 37+ medical specialties with structured templates for each domain (cardiology, surgery, pediatrics). The AI analyzes patient-provider conversation in real-time and populates record fields: history, symptoms, assessment, treatment plan. The main strength: clinicians gain 2-3 hours per day, refocusing on patient care over administration.
DAX Copilot is not available in French in the official interface. Microsoft targets enterprise organizations exclusively (hospitals, health networks) with multi-year contracts and minimum seat thresholds: solo practices and small groups are excluded by its commercial model. Native Epic integration is the deepest in the sector, though Cerner is also supported. An API enables deep integrations. Microsoft does not publish transparent pricing: per-clinician cost is negotiated by organization size and engagement type. For small independent structures, access remains impossible due to Microsoft's enterprise strategy.
Our verdict
Best for health networks and hospitals seeking to dramatically reduce clinician administrative burden while accepting multi-year Microsoft engagement. Not for you if you run a solo practice or small group: the offering is sold via enterprise channels exclusively, excludes small structures, and requires commercial negotiation for each contract.
