OpenRouter

Unified API gateway to 400+ LLM models from 70+ vendors (OpenAI, Anthropic, open-source), transparent pricing

Productivity & assistants

Overview

OpenRouter is a unified API gateway aggregating 400+ LLM models from 70+ distinct vendors (OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, Groq, Together, Fireworks, Meta, Perplexity, open-source, etc.) behind a single standardized OpenAI-compatible API. Transparent pay-as-you-go pricing: 5.5% platform fee + model price (ex. Claude 3.5 Sonnet ~$3/$15 per 1M tokens after 5.5% markup), no minimum spend or commitment. Free plan: 50 requests/day without credit card, 25+ free or low-cost startup models. Enterprise plan (quote): granular model control, automatic routing by strategy, budget management per team, SLA support.

OpenRouter offers no French-language interface and no French support. Single API with Python, JavaScript, REST standard SDKs. Major advantage: switch between heterogeneous models without changing API key or endpoint; ideal for rapid multi-model experimentation and accelerated app prototyping. Pricing weakness: 5.5% markup + model fee = inevitably more expensive than calling vendor directly (ex. OpenAI direct), but value of friction-free switching and auto-fallback justifies cost for many. Optimal use case: rapid prototyping, chaining fallback model (try GPT-4, fall to Claude if quota exhausted), teams without established contracts with multiple competing vendors.

Our verdict

Best for developers rapidly testing multiple proprietary/open-source models without managing N separate API keys, or seeking robust automatic fallback layer between vendors. Not for you if unit cost optimization is absolute priority: the 5.5% markup adds to model fee and directly increases per-token cost.
