Vuforia

Augmented reality (AR) platform for operator guidance and industrial maintenance, created by Qualcomm and acquired by PTC

Manufacturing

Overview

Vuforia is an AR platform developed by Qualcomm and acquired by PTC in 2015 for $65 million. It enables augmented reality experiences for industry: real-time work instruction display on mobile devices (tablets, glasses), operator guidance on factory floors, preventive and corrective maintenance support, and AR-based training. Vuforia Engine is used by over one million developers worldwide and integrates with PLM solutions like PTC Windchill. The platform offers multiple tiers: a free basic plan for developers, Premium and Enterprise plans for production deployment. Vuforia Studio, the no-code offering, lets non-technical teams create AR applications without programming.

Vuforia is not available in French on its official site. The ecosystem remains firmly technical: building high-performance AR apps requires either specialized development or an integrator. PTC highlights on-premises and cloud deployment capabilities for enterprise clients concerned with data control. An API enables deep integration with existing information systems. Exact pricing depends on chosen architecture (cloud, on-premises) and detectable target type (model targets, area targets): applications using advanced targets require Enterprise plans, which can make quotes steep for an SME pioneer.

Our verdict

Best for manufacturers and industrial service providers digitalizing operator guidance or large-scale AR training with enterprise support. Not for you if you seek lightweight, low-cost AR: Vuforia targets organizations with dedicated IT budgets and technical resources, and integration costs can be substantial.
